Update Files

This utility compares the current data file structures with the file structure the application is looking for and makes changes to the file structure when needed. This utility will automatically be invoked when the application is upgraded to a new version number. It is used to add new fields and tables to the database system. It does not need to be run unless directed to do so by SherWare, Inc. Technical Support.

COMMON ERRORS:

  • If you get a message with any of the following words then you probably need to update the files; primary key, invalid, validate database, 1567 or remove blanks.
  • If you get any errors when re-indexing the files, then you probably need to update the files.
  • If you get a message when opening the software and it will not let you open the software because you need to update the files, you can create a file called "update.dat" in the directory. After this file is created the software will update the files automatically before opening. The following is a detailed explanation of how to create an update.dat file.
    1. Close the software completely.
    2. Right click on the icon for the Accounting Manager and choose Properties. In the window that appears, click on Open File Location (Vista users), or Find Target (XP users). This will open a new window showing you the directory where the software is installed.
    3. Vista users: click on this link to download the file and save it to the directory shown in the previous step. www.sherware.com/download/update.dat
    4. XP users: Choose "Options" from the "Tools" menu. On the "View" tab make sure that the option to "Hide extensions for known file types" is not marked. If it is not marked then you can close the Folder Options window.
    5. Right-click in the blank area of the directory and choose "New" then "Text Document." This will add a file to the list displayed called 'New Text Document.txt'. Right-click on this file and choose Rename. Name it "update.dat" instead, being sure to completely replace the previous name. This will change the type of file from a .txt to a .dat so it should give you a message saying that it "may be unusable." Press OK on this message to confirm that you want to change the type of file.
    6. Open the software. Ignore any errors. The tables will update automatically when the software opens after logging in.
    7. If this update.dat file was created correctly, it will automatically be deleted after the software is opened and updates the files.
